How to Get Rid of Scum on a Tank Melting Flint Bottle Glass

J. William Gayner, with comments by Dennis Bratcher

This is an article written by J. William Gayner while he was General Manager at Lynchburg Glass Corporation. It was originally presented to the American Ceramic Society Annual Meeting, Glass Division, in Atlantic City, NJ, in February, 1924. The article gives a a glimpse into the practical realities of running a glass plant.

It is evident that the Lynchburg plant under Mr. Gayner did not operate on Sunday. The furnace was blocked (kept running but not at production levels) Saturday night through Sunday night, and then brought to operating temperature to begin production Monday morning. -Dennis Bratcher
